TOM JONES JUNE 2009 BACK TO MURALS
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Collage as a medium uses fragments of deconstructed images to recreate a new vision. The collected fragments and their relationship to each other may generate insights not readily discernible in ordinary visual experience.
This mural is an enlargement of a collage that I completed earlier this year. It was one of a triad entitled Three Men, a stone, a fish and an airplane. This particular piece was offered as a design for this mural because the character seemed to embody a quality of dignity and a gesture of giving, reminiscent of being an owner of a fine dining establishment. The quote was found while researching the 18th century novel Tom Jones. The words, spoken by the narrator of the story, invite the reader to consider the relationship of a host to his guests.
