ART IN THE CITY

Art in our society is in retreat. Public galleries are expensive to visit. Private galleries remain elitist, rarely visited by the public and focused on selling art. One by one, uniquely designed structures are being replaced by functional buildings which present very little to lift the spirits or please the eye.

From the time that we leave our residence in the morning, it is quite possible to get through an entire day without an artistic experience of any kind other than advertising.

We propose a response . . . public art. Large scale murals on the sides of buildings. Sculptures in vacant lots. Visual statements with no commercial or political agenda. Art for art’s sake, freely available in the midst of our urban environment.

CITY ART is a project of Gallery Arcturus and THE FOUNDATION FOR THE STUDY OF OBJECTIVE ART.

This sculpture, "gateway" by Millie Chen, resides at Spadina Ave. and Dundas St. in Toronto.
